Joint Murals
For more than a century, murals have adorned the walls of the north of Ireland’s/Northern Ireland’s cities and even appeared in its villages and rural countryside. Summer 2007 saw the first mural jointly painted by muralists from both the Republican and Loyalist communities: a Belfast rendition of Picasso’s anti-war, anti-fascism mural, “Guernica.” It was painted by muralists, Danny Devenny and Mark Ervine, fellow painter, Micky Docherty, along with community members. Devenny and Ervine have continued to design and paint together and their works are archived here. The historic significance of these reconciliation efforts continue to garner international media attention as well as local encouragement from within and across communities. Most recently, the Puzzle Mural was short listed for a cross community award in Belfast.
